The Supreme Court Historical Society, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the United States District Court for the District of Maine are pleased to announce an upcoming Supreme Court and My Hometown program in Portland, Maine, taking place July 20-24, 2026. This immersive federal court experience is FREE for high school students. All program sessions will take place at the Edward T. Gignoux U.S. Courthouse and the University of Maine School of Law.

Throughout the program, students will explore the judicial branch through the lens of a local case, United States v. Fanfan (2005). They will engage with federal judges (including Chief Judge Walker and Judge Neumann), attorneys, historians, professors, and community members to investigate the case and develop an in-depth understanding of its progression through the federal court system. As a culminating activity, students will create a capstone project to educate their community about the case's impact and the federal court system.

All current 9-12 grade students are eligible to apply. Students are responsible for obtaining a letter of recommendation from a local educator or community member who can speak to their academic and personal qualifications. Applications and letters of recommendation are due by 11:59 pm EST on May 4, 2026. For more information, go to Supreme Court and My Hometown
